Ray Martin is a long time friend of The Fred Hollows Foundation. His connection to The Foundation dates back to his friendship with Fred, which developed when Ray was covering the eye doctor’s work in remote Indigenous communities.

Ray served as The Foundation’s inaugural chairman for ten years until 2002, and was last year presented with a lifetime membership.

Ray Martin will host the official broadcast of World Youth Day 2008. He will lead a presentation team of clergy and young people to deliver the official broadcast of the week-long youth event to the English speaking world.

With a career as a television journalist spanning more than three decades, Ray Martin has also played a significant role in numerous fields of community service in support of Australians and not-for-profit organisations such as The Fred Hollows Foundation.

A press release issued at the time of his retirement from Channel Nine in February this year stated, "After more than ten thousand interviews for the Nine Network, Martin listed his exclusives with Terri Irwin, Lindy Chamberlain, Professor Fred Hollows and Sir Don Bradman amongst his favourites."
